It is well known that BMW has been the ultimate driving machine for years. The story goes that this title was earned after a BMW manager brought cars to the Blue Angels. After the Blue Angels landed their planes one of the pilots declared “this is the ultimate flying machine”, to which the BMW manager replied, “and THIS is the ultimate driving machine.” Traditionally you knew that you had arrived in business when you could afford your first BMW and, with each step up from the 3 series to the 5 series to the 7 series, your automobile became a proud symbol of your achievement. With their reputation as the ultimate driving machine established, could BMW possibly earn the title of the ultimate luxury machine? Last week before the new BMW 7 series launched they put that question to the test at a $73 million mansion in the heart of fabulous Beverly Hills.

PictureWolfgang Puck & I

Arriving at the incredible mansion that has never been lived in, it took me a moment to take it all in. With a ballroom fit for a Disney fairy tale and a staircase that took my breath away, they could have served cheeseburgers and I would still be raving. The setting was the ultimate in luxury at every step. However, this is BMW’s quest for setting the standard for the ultimate in luxury, so of course the cuisine was provided by none other than Wolfgang Puck. As a total foodie and author of a book about social media for restaurants he was top of my list for chefs I have always wanted to meet, so now BMW was making my dreams come true. I think you can see it in my face when we took this selfie together. Chef Wolfgang Puck does not disappoint in person and his food only exceeds those expectations. The asian inspired menu was incredible- from Pad Thai that was perfectly spicy to Jasmine Rice that smelled as incredible as it tasted.

Beyond the incredible food at an impressive venue, we were here to experience the new BMW 7 series. Sinking into the supple leather seats, I instantly felt surrounded by luxury. Not a detail was missed and each knob, every mirror, all of the details that would keep you falling in love each day with this luxurious driving machine were there. Better yet, BMW tells it better than I ever could.
After enjoying an incredible meal, exploring the impressive mansion, and falling in love with the new BMW 7 series it was time for the entertainment to begin. Hosted by Vegas entertainment legend Wayne Newton, he began with some of his classics and took the time to lead all of us in singing Happy Birthday to a guest. Next was the incredibly talented Kelis, whose performance showcased her song bird abilities and proved there is so much more to her voice than bringing all the boys to the yard with a milkshake.
After Kelis shared her incredible voice with us rap legend Warren G came out to perform his greatest hits. Everyone got up on their feet and the energy in the crowd was palpable.
Overall the BMW 7 series launch party in Beverly Hills exceeded my every expectation with an impressive venue, incredible cuisine from Wolfgang Puck, and amazing entertainment from some of music’s biggest names. Everyone who attended had a great time and agreed: BMW has established themselves as the ultimate luxury machine.

Oh you read that right my friends. My business partner, Kate, has convinced me that now is the time to recommit myself to healthy living. This apparently means that you go on Groupon to purchase a colonic and spend a week in trepedation concerned that your sphincter will never be the same. Upon arrival at Amazing Healing Waters, I was immediately greeted by an enthusiastic Jolli (pronounced Jolly). Jolli is a former bartender who currently spends her evenings lead singing in a classic rock band. If that doesn’t elicit a lot of confidence in her abilities to rid you of years of colon debris, her certification and intimate knowledge of all things poo related should close the deal. Paperwork completed, I found myself covered and in the fetal position on the table.

Now, yes, I can hear all of you colonic haters. You’re right. Wikipedia says colonics are a complete waste of time and high risk, with no proven benefit. I hear you. Now, according to my crunchy organic loving friends, they swear by these things, so I figure if I have jumped out of a perfectly good airplane, my booty can take one for the team. What can only be described as a smaller butt plug is inserted and the fun begins. Water is periodically flushed into your 6-8 feet of colon and, as what can only be described as fossilized debris leaves your body, it occured to me that this wasn’t going to be the traumatic experience I created in my imagination. As a fairly healthy lady who relies only on wine and not fiber for regular elimination, Jolli deemed me a “happy pooper”. I was unaware until that moment that I needed a label, but I smiled nonetheless, as my colon had clearly exceeded my expectations on all fronts. You go random body part, you go.

After 30 minutes of flushing and chatter about the benefits of social media marketing (hey, it’s me- I don’t care what I’m doing, I’m talking about what I love), the process was complete and I headed to the bathroom to ensure it was all removed. It was. No processed food, just healthy eating and lots of water. I agreed enthusiastically, envisioning 35 years of poor eating choices having been sucked out from my guts. I made it until dinner time. Wine doesn’t count as processed food, right? My colon still seems happy…

*Full disclosure: I did not receive any free services and paid in full for my colonic. You, too, can get yours by calling Jolli at 702-798-8001.

PictureMorning Naked Face

My dear friend and one of the most talented makeup artists I know, Tazia Farmer, recently helped launch the Hourglass Cosmetics line at Nordstrom Fashion Show in Las Vegas. Being a product junkie and beauty enthusiast, I had to try it out one early Friday morning. Hourglass Cosmetics was founded in 2004 by beauty industry veteran Carisa Janes. Carisa came from the Urban Decay line and had seen it all in the beauty world. Founded with a commitment to reinventing luxury cosmetics, Hourglass has carved a niche for itself as an innovative beauty brand and can be found in all of your finer department stores. Hourglass exists at the revolutionary intersection of science, beauty and luxury. But, what does that mean for your face? Well let me show you!

Picture
It began promptly at 10AM, with a tight schedule and an insistence that it last a full 16 hours, which was the day that I had ahead of me. Tazia shared that the science behind the Hourglass Cosmetics line is what makes it a standout and that the foundation she used on me took over four years just to create. Using a soft kabuki brush to work the foundation into my skin, it dried to a perfect finish without feeling like a heavy cake. Normally a MAC girl devoted to the last trends and glitter- lots and lots of glitter- I was a little disappointed that they only had one eye liner and one mascara. “The idea is timeless, classic beauty that keeps it simple,” Tazia shared. Simple. Ugh. I believe I rolled my eyes. I wanted flashy glitter and striking beauty, so I prepared myself to embrace simple. Then she pulled out the ambient lighting collection. The most beautiful highlighters and shimmers that reminded me of the most perfect tan I’d ever had. OK, maybe simple would be beautiful.

Picture
Tazia walked me through each of the products and used the most incredibly soft brushes. It felt like kisses on my face as she created a look that would take me through client meetings and into a music festival. I held my breath, preparing myself for what simple, timeless, and classic were going to look like on my face, unsure that I would be able to find room in my beauty heart for this new addition. Finally, it was time for the big reveal. AND…. I LOVED IT. I’m not just saying that because I love Tazia. Proof? I BOUGHT the Kabuki brush. The eyes were still beautiful, the ambient lighting magic she dusted on my face made me look naturally beautiful, and I didn’t miss the crazy colors and glitter of MAC. Granted, when it’s Gay Pride parade time I’ll probably be dusting that all over myself, but I could totally see myself using Hourglass Cosmetics for everyday, when I want to be beautifully me.

Picture
Alright, and how much did Hourglass Cosmetics or Tazia pay me to say all of this? Nothing. Nada. Not a free lipstick. Just my honest to goodness, I wasn’t so sure I was going to like it, opinion. How did it hold up? Here’s Kate and I at Life is Beautiful Music Festival after six solid hours in the hot Las Vegas (104 degrees plus humidity) sun. Didn’t melt, didn’t cake off, held up perfectly. The next day I had another day at the festival and I was a little sad with my other foundation because it left me feeling cakey by comparison.

Give it a try yourself by calling your local Nordstrom to schedule a free makeover at the Hourglass Cosmetics counter.

Writing a book is much like having a baby. When you decide to do it you’re sure that it is a great idea filled with hope and joy. Then you get into the reality of the process and it’s ugly, uncomfortable, and far more intense than you ever imagined. There is nothing anyone can tell you about the process to fully prepare you and the process itself is deeply personal for each individual. A funny thing happens the day after you finish your first book. Much like those first jubilant moments after delivering a baby you forget the pain to focus on what is, of course, a beautiful baby. Nothing is more perfect. Nothing is more brilliant. In spite of exhaustion this new creation is all that you want to talk about. And with that, I announce that I have given birth to a beautiful new baby book!

PictureMe & #ChoicePeoplePerson

The chick on the left is Andrea Fasano and she landed the coolest summer job ever: being Choice Hotel’s #ChoicePeoplePerson traveling all over the United States this summer to connect with people and embody the company’s mission of bringing people together through travel and meaningful in-person connections. Yes, you read that right. Andrea is being paid to experience Philadelphia, New York, Washington DC, Kissimmee, Florida, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. Just the coolest gig ever, right? You’d love to hate her, but she’s too freaking amazing for that. I had the pleasure of dining with the Choice Hotels team and Andrea last night at Julian Serrano’s Lago at the Bellagio, which a delicious barrage of course after course of Italian small plates that exceeded my every expectation. Today we headed out to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway to drive fast at the Richard Petty Driving Experience

Picture
Driving out to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway is like driving to another city. It’s a solid 35 minutes outside of the city and, unless you are a carload of enthusiastic EDM kids, it’s not the most interesting drive you’ve ever done. As you pull in you’ll follow the signs to the Richard Petty Driving Experience, which will place you in the center of the race track. Right in the middle. Now, I neither watch Nascar or have ever attended races, but it was an incredible rush getting out of my car and feeling like a tiny dot amidst this massive speedway as race cars roared around me. First stop is the office where you will sign your life away and Choice Hotels & Richard Petty Driving Experience presented each of us with a swag bag that included (drumroll please): A SELFIE STICK. Public Service Announcement to all brands looking to connect with influencers and media folks: All you had to do was gift us selfie sticks. Yes, I have spent months making fun of everyone who uses them, but when given one, apparently my inner hypocrite is channeled and I, like every other savvy blogger and journalist in the room, became a kid with a new toy. A new toy that insisted we selfie the crap out of everything. That’s it. I give in. Go get one. You don’t have to tell people, but you need it. I promise. Richard Petty Driving Experience nailed it. Well done marketing team, well done. So, what was the drive like? The video of me giggling non stop tells it better than I ever could.

Final review: 10+ Stars on all fronts. This from a girly girl who would never in a million years have done this on her own. A few in our group had tried the Zero to 1 desert dune buggy experience the day before with the Richard Petty Driving Experience team and had the same rave reviews. You will be hot, sweaty, and it is loud, but it is entirely worth it for the rush you get driving faster than you have probably ever gone. During the month of August you can experience the same ride along for just $79, plus when you book it online they will donate $10 to the Lou Gehrig’s ice bucket challenge.

Part of the Choice Hotels team was the Kimberly, the Yoda of Corporate Communications for BlueGreenVacations. BlueGreenVacations is a vacation ownership (time share) focused on sharing happiness. They work with Choice Hotels, so that you can book an hotel room that is better than a hotel room with one of their Ascend Hotel Collection rooms located just off the Las Vegas strip. The one-of-a-kind, upscale hotels in the Ascend Hotel Collection ensure that you have a unique experience connecting with the people who matter most in your world. If you are considering vacation ownership or are curious about some of the innovative programs happening in the time share ownership world, you should check out Kimberly and her amazing properties.

Full Disclosure: All of these items were given to me at no cost to review, but if they’d been awful I would be telling you that. The awesomeness is 100% authentic Krista candor.

It was mid March in Austin, Texas and as I went from SXSW event to SXSW party people were buzzing about the release of two new live streaming applications: Periscope and Meerkat. Ever the rebel, I instantly fell in love with Meerkat over “the man” of Periscope, which was owned by Twitter. I began following Meerkat creator Ben Rubin and live streaming all over Austin. It was the perfect party and audience to celebrate new technology in the social media world. However, after the first few weeks my love affair began to fade. For the brands that I work with- exclusively entertainment and restaurants- the vast majority of their audience isn’t available on a moment’s notice to tune in, so I kept hearing about how Periscope saved the streams for 24 hours, allowing for more engagement after the live stream. Alas, “the man” and his fancy technology won out. In early April I moved all of my brands and myself over to Periscope. Having happily landed on Periscope, I thought I would stay there for much longer and I do think it is brilliant. However, Zuckerberg and his team at Facebook have CHANGED THE ENTIRE live streaming game with their Facebook Live feature. Why? If you have a verified account on Facebook (they are doing a slow roll out, so I expect this will grow to include everyone over time), you can use the Mentions feature to live stream what is going on right now in your life. Here’s the clincher and why brands are going to FALL IN LOVE: it does’t save it for 24 hours. Facebook Live saves it forever ever on your Facebook page as a post, so your fans can like, comment, or share it. Yup, mic drop. Facebook Live just took the world’s largest social media platform and gave it the functionality of live streaming. The future has arrived! If you haven’t fallen in love with live streaming, here is why I adore it:

*It is the ultimate in authenticity. For the chefs in the kitchens of the restaurants I work with it empowers them to share behind the scenes moments and answer questions from around the world. The access is incredible and people love it. Live streaming has become the new television.

*It is the ultimate in community. You are building a channel and community just like YouTube, but you have all of the lovely features of social media that we adore. You get real time engagement PLUS you get the commenting and sharing that can happen after.

*It is the ultimate in access. At the Emmys in September I will be taking you along as I meet some of television’s biggest stars and, rather than me asking them my questions, you will get to ask them YOUR questions.

It isn’t all love and magic. The tough part is that the existing audience is fairly technologically and social media savvy. My grandpa isn’t on live streaming. He just mastered how to accept friends on Facebook, so I anticipate it will be slow to grow to the older generation that was already struggling to adopt new technology. Also, I don’t get dudes asking me to show my boobs on Twitter or Instagram everyday, but every time I live stream I get at least 2-3 morons that I have to block because they say disgusting sexual things. If you are a hot female you should be aware of that.

Today I am live streaming my entire day on my Facebook page. Check it out and join me here. Happy live streaming my friends!

I am a HUGE Monster Products fan. Why? I adore an authentic business leader who shares his successes alongside his failures and Head Monster Noel Lee does just that. But more than raising the bar for authentic leadership in business, Monster Products creates innovative products that set the standard for quality. With the Superstar Backfloat Waterproof Speaker (valued at $149.95) they have created a summertime speaker that is perfect for my girls to use at bath time, even better for my backyard pool barbecues, and (as you can see on the left) even better when I want to listen to some James Taylor while getting some sun in my pool. I love this product so much that Monster Products gave me an extra one to give away to you!

Here’s how you can WIN:

1. Post a photo of your favorite summer photo tagging #MonsterSummer on your Instagram profile and make sure you tag me @keepinupwkrista (if you like my profile please follow, but not required)

2. That’s it. Make sure you post it by Friday, July 31st at 3PM (PST) and then watch your Instagram on Friday afternoon because I will pick a winner to send this out Friday afternoon. I don’t care where in the world you live, how many followers you have, and you just have to keep the summer photo G rated. No one wants to see your nakedness.

The team at Jord Wood Watches reached out to me to share their story and document the craziness that is my world. From pool side lounging to playing with my girls to giving superhero presentations in front of large audiences, my Jord Cora- Koa wood and rose gold watch stood up to it all and gained me many compliments. From day to night the Cora kept it classy and didn’t miss a beat. To get yours click here

What was your biggest challenge when you created JORD?

-No one uses a watch for the functionality these days. Everyone has some sort of device in their pocket, purse, or near by they use to tell the time. How are we going to break into a market that major designers and brands have had a strangle hold on for so long? To my first point, we wanted to create something a little different, we wanted to take advantage of people not using their watches to tell time, but to show their personality/style. To my second point, we needed to figure out a way to market ourselves, go somewhere that none of the other major designers or brands have gone, surprisingly that was the web. We have really developed our marketing strategy and have ranked well in Google. I would say overall breaking into the watch marketing and breaking the metal/plastic/rubber watch mold was the most difficult. People were a little skeptical to see if a wooden watch would hold up.

Why wood watches?
-Everyone grows up following trends, doing wearing what everyone else is wearing. We wanted to break the trends of the Rolex, Fossil, Michael Kors, etc watches and start our own trend. Wooden watches are environmental friendly, which does go along with a huge trend now, everyone wants to go green. Our watches tell more than just time though, they let you know about the person’s personality. Each watch is different, even if it is the same model, unique down to the wood grain. Our timepieces are unique in every way, fashionable, eco friendly, and do give the time. 😉

What has been the most exciting part of growing JORD?
-The most exciting part in growing our business is watching it grow from the ground up. It sounds cliche but there has been a million and ten growing pains. We were told by hundreds of people that we couldn’t do it, we would needs thousands of dollars in funding, but we started within our means, bootstrapped everything and have grown the business into one that is profitable. It is awesome to see some grow from the beginning, you treat like it is your baby. We were looking at a target market that is young professional 25-40 years old, but we have learned that our market ranges from 10 year old children to 70 year old adults, it is hard to find a product that is loved across the board like that. To be a part of something like this is truly a blessing, and very cool to see it day in and day out.  One of the most gratifying things that is still hard to wrap my head around is creating and designing a product, seeing thousands of people post pics of it on their wrist wearing it all over the world.

Tell me where you see the company in 10yrs.
-Right now we are very focused on online marketing and sales, that is where the majority of our business is. However, down the road we would love to be a part of the major department stores, in jewelry shops across the United States and even the world. We have also discussed the possibility of moving into other wooden products such as tie clips, cuff links, sunglasses, belts, etc. In 10 years from now I see us as one of the leading trend setters when it comes to jewelry not with just wood, but other natural materials.

Huge thanks to guest contributor and fellow unicorn, Sabrina Marshall-Wojtewicz, for writing this inspiring piece that couldn’t be a more perfect way to celebrate Independence Day. Home of the free because of the brave and I find it so incredible that Rodney served our country in battle and then came home to serve it even more by helping to grow our economy with his entrepreneurial venture. Please join me in supporting this hero. -Krista

In honor of July 4th today, we wanted to put a spotlight on an entrepreneur who has fought for the independence we will so proudly celebrate today. Not only is it a unique product that will appeal to a mass market of Dad’s, service-members and outdoors enthusiasts, it just launched on Kickstarter THIS WEEK in celebration of a veteran owned business bringing independence to Dad’s everywhere, who have ever been forced to carry the pretty floral brands us Mommy Unicorn’s so often love!

Enter, TacTikes: The Last Diaper Bag you will ever buy! Founded and run by Rodney Curry. We asked this Army veteran-Daddy some questions:

What ignited the spark in you to start TacTikes?

I had just been laid off from my corporate job and I was looking for my next gig. Upon exhausting every job listing in Austin, I came across the Entrepreneurial Boot camp for Veterans with Disabilities. I presented my idea of a modular diaper bag as my business idea, and the excitement and great feedback I received fired me up. The encouragement and support I received in the EBV program gave me the fuel I needed to start TacTikes. Six months later I joined The Bunker @ Austin, and the network of community support there kept the fire burning. My fellow veterans empowered me to become an entrepreneur, and pursue my dreams.

How did the idea for TacTikes come about?

I was sitting on my couch one day, thinking about how much I want to take my daughter to an upcoming festival. I was looking at her diaper bag with busted zippers and no backpack straps, dreading taking that with us to the festival. My Army bag was sitting next to it, and I had an “Aha” moment to merge both bags and create a durable, functional bag with a baby and toddler focus.

What motivates you?

During my 12-month tour in Iraq, too many soldiers in my unit made the ultimate sacrifice. The brotherhood we forged in combat left a permanent mark on me, and one I will always cherish. Every day, I think about those soldiers no longer here to pursue their dreams. Pursuing my dreams is my way of honoring their sacrifice.

What is TacTikes up to these days?

This is a VERY exciting time for TacTikes. We are launching our Kickstarter campaign on  July 1st! The month of July is filled with engagements to continue spreading the word of our launch on Kickstarter, and I plan on being very busy come August 1st, fulfilling tons of pre-orders after our successful campaign.

What three pieces of advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

·       Get and keep a day job. Your startup’s revenues will not support your salary.

·       Don’t go at it alone. Find a partner(s) with which to pursue a venture.

·       Wherever you are, be there.

How many hours do you work a day on average?

My day starts at 7am and typically goes until midnight or so. I split the hours up between MBA classes and projects, TacTikes operations and events, and spending dinner with my family. I’ll typically work 12-14 hours a day, but I carve out a couple of hours here and there for fun time like going to the shooting range, catching a movie, or hitting up a driving range.

How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?

Being an entrepreneur has taken a lot of hours away from family time. That is not easy to deal with, but my hours are fluid, so it gives me the ability to accomplish things during the day when places aren’t crowded. It’s a night and day difference in how we are able to spend time in the military. As an entrepreneur I get to see my daughter and wife every day and can rearrange my schedule for important events. This is another way I honor the sacrifice of my brothers and sisters: by never taking for granted the time I am able to spend with my family.

How do you define success?

To me success is happiness. It may sound cliché, but to me it really is that simple. I spend a lot of hours every day to reach my goal of making TacTikes successful. Empowering parents to spend more time on outdoor adventures makes me happy. Accomplishing tasks and having a creative outlet make me happy. TacTikes allows me to do a lot of things that make me happy.

Who has been your greatest inspiration?

My daughter. She inspires me every day to be a better person than I was the previous day. I would have never thought to create the best diaper bag known to man if I was never a parent.

What are your hobbies?

I have loved shooting all my life. I started with a bb gun, moved to tournament competition paintball, and the army allowed me to become proficient in firearms. I am now venturing into 3-gun competitions. Shooting is a place, for me, where nothing else exists. Controlling my breathing, trigger pull, and sight picture take a lot of concentration, and that concentration is what I love about it.
